How To: Write on using after effects
This is the first thing that I learned how to do in after effects and I love doing it. Once you do it once I promise you’ll be like “wait thats all I had to do?! Thats way easier than I thought..." And you'll start doing it all the time!
Step 1: Write your text!
95% of my lettering is done on my ipad pro in a program called ProCreate. If you have an ipad I highly recommend this app because you can export whatever you’re working on in the app as a psd so it’s super convenient!
Step 2: Import your lettering
So you can either just import the lettering itself into after effects, or if you’re working in a photoshop file you can import your psd. The best part about the adobe creative suite is how all the programs talk to each other so you can drop your psd into after effects and still have all the layers you were working with in photoshop!
Step 3: Create a mask
With your lettering layer selected, use the pen tool to trace along the letters.
Step 4: Create a stroke
With your mask still selected, go to effect>generate>stroke.
Step 5: Adjust the brush
Depending on the thickness of your lines, adjust the brush size and hardness. Also switch the paint style from “on original image” to “reveal original image”. You can preview the effect by turning off the mask lines and scrubbing the end percentage.
Step 6: Keyframe it and watch the magic happen
Voila! Now you have another skill to add to your library of knowledge!
